InReach will still be useful in more extreme conditions. I can take the inReach (in an additional case) underwater 100m. Taking the iPhone to 100m would be a pain in the ass

I had one for a few weeks and had latest firmware, but the cost was a deal breaker. I loved the data and it’s much prettier, also sleep data seems better than my Garmin. But $20 a month is a bit steep so I sent it back as the value-prop isn’t there.

That Apple is junk, still on my Watch 6. Looking at Garmin next or Polar...

Hi Dave, I had been using this band for over a decade, and I predominantly do strength training where I noticed that the heart rate is pretty much the same to what my Garmin records. But I do observe some variations in resting heart rate which is not in line with Garmin, but I guess it has improved a lot and request you to add more videos comparing to check the accuracy.

Heads up to anybody thinking of buying this watch- I upgraded to this when my previous Amazfit GTS3 suddenly died mid work out. From day 1 it feels very much like a slight update on GTS3 which is 3 or so years old at this point. Even the dimensions and design are identical. Even the watch faces are identical. I've just returned it as its awful for tracking fitness. Did a 10km run on a treadmill. It registered 5.5km and would not let me ''correct'' the distance to anything over 8.9km for some reason. (on a side note- about thirty seconds after I sat down after walking to the gym, running 10km and walking home again, the watch started sending me reminders to stand up and not sit around for too long.......) From day one it could simply not register my swimming workouts. The previous GTS3 could. After a few weeks I realised if you stop after every single length of the pool it DOES register the lap. So it essentially cannot detect tumble turns or front crawl. It will register breast stroke if you stop on each lap. Battery is great- but its useless if the watch cant perform basic functions like lap-tracking. Strap is also very small. I'm only 1.75m and skinny, and I have the ''clasp'' on the 3rd last hole.

I'd like to add a niche crowd who still like to wear mechanical watches. I chose a Garmin so that I wouldn't have to charge it as frequently as an Apple watch if I'm wearing my other watches.

I bought a whoop a month ago . It broke in 2 weeks. They sent me another one. Broke in a day. I’m now in a battle with them to get a refund

I have the last firmware version of Whoop. Today I ran 10.7 km and my average HR by Whoop was 140 and by Garmin HR monitor 143, max HR was the same by both devices. In general whoop now is quite accurate, I like it.

I noticed improvements too. However, my Whoop terminates next month. Unless something magical is released, I'm going to switch over to the Morpheus system for the remainder of this race season.

It's really rare to see such a large improvement in sensor accuracy after the hardware has been in the wild for so long. Credit to Whoop for the update yet I can't help but feel whoop remains too expensive too limited and the hardware/design is getting dated.

I was in a motorcycle accident in the mountain last year. No cell service off road in the mountains. Used my iPhone 14 Pro Max to get help, worked great (minus a few clouds) I also keep my Apple Watch on me so I always have it on me all the time, and it will communicate with the phone.

Apple is the best overall watch period, and it’s not even close. If you are a serious runner with over 30 miles per week then Apple sucks for that and Garmin all day.

The InReach allows me to share my track and position every 5 minutes with anyone while I’m out touring. They still have something to offer.

I never will buy an Apple product.

Owned both and loved both. Ended up selling my Epix. Miss it. But know I’d miss Apple Watch also if I had sold it. Kept Apple Watch for: Hevy lifting app. Smart watch functionality. Athlytic app. Watch is lighter (not a Ultra).

This is definitely nice for a back up, but the real game changer is coming with the T-Mobile/starlink Partnership that will become available this fall where all T-Mobile customers will have access to Starlink satellites the moment they go out of cell tower reception. It will not require moving your phone to a satellite. SpaceX has been launching new star link satellites with the ultra sensitive cellular antennas since January.

I dumped my Garmin Instinct 2X for this and have not looked back. Love this watch and I am not even an exercise freak I just liked the way it looks, and I like G Shock.

If my life or a loved ones life is dependent on a gps emergency beacon, they’re practically priceless regardless of how many connectivity options a smartphone has. A phone barely lasts an entire day when it constantly searches for signal and slightly longer on airplane mode. If you’re going on multiple day hikes then a smartphone is not going to cut it.

Wow, I watched a bunch of other tech shows and somehow this wasn’t talked about by any of them. Cough MKBHD cough. Great now my wife can call me while I’m on a camping trip where there was no cell service before.

I’ve been using an Apple Watch Ultra for running for about a year and a half. It is a great smart watch, but wholly underwhelming running watch. I miss Garmin Connect, Apple fitness super duper sucks in comparison. The data presentation is subpar and having to build workouts using just the watch is terrible. Having to do multiple swipes/touches on the touchscreen on the Apple Ultra to end a run vs using one of the buttons is also a huge suck factor. Also, I’m considering doing my first ultra (50m) and am really concerned about using it for that because of battery life.

Why not go all the way and Garmin just makes this band and a ring. 🤷🏾‍♂️

This makes so much sense, which is unfortunately why Garmin would never do it (joking, kinda). But seriously, I think Garmin has not displayed much initiative to expand beyond sports watches, which I can understand given that’s their bread and butter product. To that end, I’m curious how many current Garmin uses would forgo their sports watches for a Whoop-like band (if it is able to deliver on the same data metrics as a Garmin watch). I would imagine something like this could potentially pull from those thinking about buying an entry level Garmin watch. There is also no guarantee that Garmin will be able to pull enough competition from Whoop to make this venture worth while. I think Whoop has done a great job marketing this to a broad population and they have made it clear what the Whoop can and cannot do. Most people who would want features in a Garmin are more likely to get one anyways. Another possible consideration is that Apple will be encroaching into Whoop’s space with their Watch OS updates and a rumored Apple Ring. Garmin executives might be inclined to double-down on what they’re good at (full feature sports watches) and not try to launch new product lines.

Your misleading headline notwithstanding, I don't see how this kills the inReach. I have an iPhone 12 and an inReach. First off, I can send non-urgent satellite messages via the inReach just fine. And with the Garmin app, you can use your phone's keyboard to do, so need not rely on the clunky inReach interface. Secondly, the fact that the inReach is another device is seen by many is an advantage. For such a critical function, redundant hardware is preferable to taking your chances with one device, especially since the inReach is far more rugged than a phone. Rugged=good in the backcountry. inReach battery life also=good in the backcountry. OTOH, as you've noted, Garmin's subscription rates are a crime, so competition may force their rates lower.

Not really. While you can send a text message, Inreach has the ability to get emergency services mobilized without knowing who you'd need to send a text message to. Doubtful most people do the research to figure out who provides emergency serivces for the wilderness area that you happen to be hiking in.

You know what would be really cool? If phone companies put a low power reflective display on the back side of phones and then you could put it in some kind of low power mode where the main screen on the front side is turned off and the reflective display had garmin like functionality.

So I’m coming to this waaaay after the fact. I currently have a FR945 LTE that is now three years old. It’s done well, but I realize now that it was probably overkill for my needs. Would the Pace 3 be a worthy successor? Would probably want the Pod 2 as well for workout days to help reduce lag from pace changes. At the very least, it would give me insight into the Coros ecosystem for a low price.

I don't know why no one mention the endless bugs you can have with garmins. I had an epix pro gen 2, HR issues, sleep tracking problems and other, very annoying issues. Bought a Forerunner 965. A bit better, but still. For this price, it's not acceptable. Check their forums, the new HR tracking issues appear on almost every watch, since March.

I am a pilot and sent several text messages without any issues at 30,000 feet. I don’t have WiFi in the aircraft I fly so it’s been absolutely amazing. Messages have gone pretty fast and without any issues within a few seconds. I am glad I didn’t waist $300 plus monthly subscription on the Garmin inreach
